New season kicks off with "American Jazz Masters"

Lee County Community Orchestra's first concerts of the 2022-23 season feature music from the greatest jazz and big band composers with two performances of "American Jazz Masters" on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3:00 and 7:30 pm at the Mann Center of North Carolina in Sanford.


The audience can expect the drums and bass to be the critical rhythm section for these jazz tunes as well as some great trumpet and clarinet solos in the Armstrong and Gershwin arrangements. The "American Jazz Masters" program:


The Star-Spangled Banner - John Stafford Smith (1750-1836).

Cole Porter Salute - Cole Porter (1891-1964) arr. John Whitney.

Satchmo! (A Tribute to Louis Armstrong) - Louis Daniel Armstrong (1901-71) arr. Ted Ricketts.

My Funny Valentine - Richard Rodgers (1902-79) arr. Jerry Brubaker.

Salute to Ol' Blue Eyes (Songs famously performed by Frank Sinatra) - arr. John Moss (1948-2010).

Moonlight Serenade - Glenn Miller (1904-44) arr. Bob Cerulli.

A Salute to the Big Bands - arr. Calvin Custer (1939-98).

Duke Ellington (A Medley for Orchestra) - Edward Kennedy Ellington (1899-1974) arr. Calvin Custer.

Moon River - Henry Mancini (1924-94) arr. John Moss.

Gershwin in Concert - George Gershwin (1916-37) & Ira Gershwin (1896-1983) arr. Chuck Sayre.
